Dr. Hawrelak, a Chemistry professor at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, has been teaching and writing for the past 9 years. Being able to sit down with a professor of mine was a great privilege to be able to learn more about him and a little bit of his background, what he enjoys doing in his career field, and what tasks he takes on throughout a daily basis. Writing is a huge aspect of his career field, along with communicating with and meeting new people. From the classroom, to his colleagues and beyond, he is an essential role to the Chemistry field with his writing abilities.
The writing of Dr. Hawrelak consists mostly of lectures for class, often on a daily basis. Since he teaches several Chemistry based classes at Bloomsburg University, he is always preparing power points and papers for his lecture classes. Dr. Hawrelak feels that with writing things out and preparing it for class helps the students to be able to understand the material he is covering better and also helps them get a visual of what he is talking about. Along with the lecture writing he does on a daily basis, Dr. Hawrelak is also writing E-Mail’s and memos in between his fellow colleagues to communicate between each other. Another writing topic he is asked to do are recommendation letters for colleagues and students alike. In the past, Dr. Hawrelak has written letters for students that are applying to get in to a Graduate School or students that have recently graduated and are looking to get a job in their field of study.
Audience is very important to Dr. Hawrelak when it comes to his writing. Almost all of the time, his writing is directed to his students or peers in his field. An example of this would be his lectures for class. All of these writings are directly toward the benefit of his students for learning purposes. For his peers in his field, it is articles that have been published in major books and journals. The major article that is truly important to Dr. Hawrelak is a research article that he wrote for the American Chemical Society in 1999. This was the first major article that he wrote in his career and the first relevant article having to do with his field of study. He placed a lot of time and effort in to the article also and for it to be published in a book such as that is very important to him.
Overall, Dr. Hawrelak takes his writing very seriously whether it comes to writing towards his class or publishing an article in a major Chemistry related book. He loves to have the satisfaction of helping people with the work that he does. Putting forth a lot of effort in something you love is very important to him and if you want a positive effect on the people around you such as your peers, the satisfaction is worth the effort that is done. Being able to learn more about Dr. Hawrelak and why he writes and enjoys writing was a great privilege and I have learned a lot just from interviewing and taking the time to ask questions.
